A BUSHFIRE that burned up to seven hectares of land on the NSW south coast was deliberately lit, police say.

The fire at St Georges Basin was noticed around 5.30pm (AEDT) on Friday and has since been brought under control.

Police are now investigating the cause of the fire, and believe it was deliberately lit.

Witnesses have told officers they saw a man riding a yellow "Thumpstar" motorbike in the area just before the fire.

He is described as being aged in his 20s. At the time, he was wearing a black shirt and white cap.

A red VS Holden Commodore sedan was also seen in the area at the time.

Police would like to speak with anyone who may have any information about the man.
