TONY Abbott's description of the push to legalise same-sex marriage as "fashion" shows he's out of touch with modern Australia, Labor Party campaign spokeswoman and high profile gay mother Penny Wong says.
The opposition leader said on Wednesday he was not "someone who wants to see radical change based on the fashion on the moment", on the issue of gay marriage.
He later clarified his comment, saying it was not the "only important issue" facing Australia.
Senator Wong said Mr Abbott was out of touch.
"I think most Australians would agree equality isn't a fashion item," she told reporters in Melbourne.
"And the fact that Tony Abbott thinks like that really demonstrates that he's out of touch with the values of modern Australia."
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has committed to introduce same-sex marriage legislation within 100 days of taking office.
